75 – Sing Street, The Man Who Knew Infinity, Sunset Song, Blue Jay, James White, Nasty Baby

In what is our last episode where we rundown of films from 2016, we also get hot and sweaty in 40 (hawt) degree temperatures to bring this episode recorded on Invasion Day (aka Australia Day). We start out with John Carney’s latest musical Sing Street (there are slight spoilers in this discussion, but honestly, this is a film that knowing what happens doesn’t matter). Sticking in the UK, we move to Oxford where there is The Man Who Knew Infinity as shown by Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons. Then, moving north from England we visit the rolling countryside of early 1900’s Scotland in Terence Davies beautiful epic Sunset Song. Just in case ‘Murica thought we had forgotten they made films too, we take a jump to somewhere-ville with Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson in Blue Jay. Bernadette runs down the son-mum cancer story with James White. And finally, we go into the somewhat underrated film Nasty Baby – we go into spoilers in this discussion as well, but clearly mark when the spoilers are (or, just see the time stamps below).

As mentioned at the beginning of the episode, we recorded this on January 26th 2017, and naturally there has been a great deal of heated discussions about the date and what it means to the traditional owners of this land we live in. We would like to recognise that AB Film Review and The Last New Wave are recorded on Whadjuk Noongar land and we pay our respects to the traditional owners of this land. If you are interested in finding out more about why the date of Australia Day needs to change, then please head over to the IndigenousX website for more details.

Andrew has been a film lover all of his life. For a while now he's been talking about how great films are and usually that's been directly to his wife, Bernadette. Now with AB Film Review everyone else in the world can listen to what Andrew has to say to his wife. Bernadette grew up renting videos from a Plains Video. She mostly hired out Cry Baby and wore the tape thin learning the lines to the John Waters classic. After a series of arguments in the car ride home with her husband, Andrew, the two decided to record their arguments and launch them into the world for everyone to listen to.
