Nominees Announced For The 7th AACTA Awards

Nicole Kidman as Sue Brierly, David Wenham as John Brierly, Sunny Pawar as Saroo Brierly

It’s that time of year again, the 7th annual AACTA award nominations have been announced. As per usual, it’s a pretty exciting lineup of announcements.

Taking the lead with 12 nominations is Garth Davis’ feature debut Lion. A record 17 feature films have been nominated this year, which is great to see. Lion goes up against Ali’s WeddingBerlin SyndromeHounds of Love and Jasper Jones for Best Picture.

An interesting point of note is that this year, each of the films up for the main prize have a genuine Australian connection. Yes, an obvious dig at the non-Australian focused Hacksaw Ridge and The Great Gatsby taking away the big prize in years past. While it’s great to see those films win, it’s even better to see stories that reflect the Australian experience be rewarded.

Other films up for a chance to win an AACTA award include The Butterfly TreeDon’t TellRed Dog: True Blue and Killing Ground. A few notable omissions include Ben Elton’s hilarious Three Summers, Aaron Glenane, Aaron Pedersen and Harriet Dyer for Killing Ground, Aaron McGrath for Jasper Jones, the cinematography in both Killing Ground and Watch the Sunset, and Max Riemelt for Berlin Syndrome. But, not everybody can be nominated!

A final note of interest – Western Australia leads the race with a total of sixteen nominations, with Hounds of LoveJasper Jones and Red Dog: True Blue all showcasing the talent and brilliance that Western Australia has to offer. The remaining states and their nominations were: Tasmania – 12 (Lion), Victoria – 10 (Ali’s WeddingThe Death and Life of Otto Bloom), Queensland – 9 (Don’t TellThe Butterfly TreeAustralia DayJungle), International – 8 (Berlin Syndrome), and New South Wales – 3 (Dance Academy: The MovieKilling GroundThe Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One).

As someone who absolutely loved Lion, I’m beyond excited to see Sunny Pawar get nominated in Best Lead Actor, and can only hope that he makes it down to Australia for the ceremony as he brings a smile to anyone’s face.

For those that have been nominated, congratulations and may you be victorious on the night!

Andrew has been a film lover all of his life. For a while now he’s been talking about how great films are and usually that’s been directly to his wife, Bernadette. Now with AB Film Review everyone else in the world can listen to what Andrew has to say to his wife.

Bernadette grew up renting videos from a Plains Video. She mostly hired out Cry Baby and wore the tape thin learning the lines to the John Waters classic. After a series of arguments in the car ride home with her husband, Andrew, the two decided to record their arguments and launch them into the world for everyone to listen to.
